Minimal dining space with modern furnishings and sculptural lighting in a Brooklyn residence
Private Residential

Williamsburg Carriage House

Originally conceived as a pair of speculative carriage houses, this residence took a very unexpected direction. Purchased mid-construction as little more than raw studs and temporary stairways, the house was reimagined from the inside out for a young family with twins, a growing art collection, and a highly specific point of view. The interiors reject the expected Brooklyn industrial language in favor of something quieter and more exacting: crisp architectural detailing, concealed functionality, natural materials, and a strong sense of restraint. Across four levels, the home feels open, calm, and deeply personal — designed around family life as much as the art and objects collected over time.

A Staircase in Motion

The staircase became the architectural anchor of the home. Extending through all four levels, steel stringers hold frameless glass panels while mitered fumed white oak treads and risers create a continuous waterfall effect. Positioned directly against the home’s large arched window, the stairs introduce a striking contrast between the exterior’s historic references and the restrained modernism within.

Small decisions throughout reinforce that clarity. Flooring seams align precisely with the stair treads, integrated storage is built beneath the lower-level stair, and handrails and lighting are incorporated directly into the architecture rather than applied onto it.

Quiet Precision

The interiors were designed with equal attention to durability and atmosphere. Natural wool and cotton upholstery, wool gabardine drapery, and non-toxic finishes were selected to support a healthier living environment for a young family, while concealed storage and hidden systems maintain visual calm throughout the home.

The kitchen, dining, and living areas unfold as one continuous space, with appliances disappearing behind paneling and the television concealed behind artwork mounted on a lift. In the primary suite, a custom-designed bed integrates lighting, storage, and charging elements into a single composition. Furnishings, artwork, and objects were selected collaboratively with the clients, resulting in a home that feels highly tailored, but never overdesigned.

“Collaboration was central to this project. Every decision — from the materials to the artwork — was about creating a home that felt warm, functional, and personal to the family living there.” Sergio Mercado BAMO, Principal
