Sonoma Residence
Tucked into a quiet hillside within California Wine Country, this home feels at ease in its landscape. Set on 65 acres of undeveloped land and framed by oak trees, the home draws from the simple beauty of Northern California, Japanese architecture, and the owners’ global sensibility.
Designed for longtime clients, two cedar-clad volumes — connected by a glass foyer and anchored by open courtyards — create a home that is both grounded and expansive, where natural light, color, and collected pieces bring life and meaning to every room.

Gracious, not Ostentatious
The interiors were designed around the couple’s evolving collection of art, furnishings, and found objet, many of which had lived in previous homes.
Rather than starting from scratch, BAMO helped give these beloved pieces a newfound relevance in a contemporary setting. Gio Ponti chairs were reupholstered, vintage tables were repurposed, and the client’s son contributed custom metalwork throughout, including the fireplace, sculpture, and kitchen hood. A custom designed-bedframe in the primary bedroom emulates a cocoon and floats amongst the landscape framed by expansive windows.
Every piece has a story, and every space is shaped to hold it.
The home’s siting was a study in balance — tucked beneath a canopy of trees for protection and privacy, yet open to views of the valley beyond. The layout reflects this same duality. Courtyards invite light and air into the interiors, while floor-to-ceiling windows allow one room to flow into the next. A palette of soft whites, quiet neutrals, and bold touches of blue and ochre brings warmth and movement to the minimalist architecture.
Inside, the spaces were shaped not just for beauty, but for how the clients live. She is a consummate host, a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, a passionate gardener, and an avid volunteer within her community. He is contemplative and connected to nature. The home supports their slower pace and shared values: a low-maintenance, single-level retreat with room for art, guests, and daily rituals.
